two bits

Merry Christmas, everyone -- hope you're having a fun time. Since I haven't come up with a holiday card yet, here's two bits from the desk this morning--

milk truck

A milk truck is not a spoiler (I hope). Unlike literally every other panel.

to'hajiilee

My Breaking Bad piece that was a part of Multiversity’s tribute to the series (here’s all of them). Great show, but you don't need me to tell you that. Had to be very quick and simple with this one, or I would've ended up drawing pretty much every character they had...

dot com

The main site, www.to-zo.com, has been replaced with a better-looking, easily updatable, and way more tablet and phone-friendly version. Hooray. Check it out if you have a minute, and let me know how it looks to you.

(while I'm moving things around and reorganizing, things on the blog might stop working for a little bit -- no worries, everything will be back soon)

From the sketchbook

Some handmade snapshots from around the flat, since I'm not on Instagram.

GTL! #1

The cover of the first issue of the next series, out early next year. As a friend dubbed it, "The Soundgarden cover". I also did the hand-lettered title for this one, separate from the main image. Here's the sketch for it:

green

This one's not from the tour, but it's pretty much in the same mode-- it's actually from a discarded digital layout. One cup of coffee to ink, one to color.

sad sack

More sketchbook funnies! (yellow because it was drawn in the yellow pad)

mornings are hell

Colored another one of the German tour Hellboys while having the morning coffee. Here's how the original drawing looked:

tv thumbs

Much more useful when you don't do one page of them once a year--

HB20

During the German tour last month at least a hundred requests were "Hellboy" -- so here's is one of them, "Hellboy climbing a mountain". Thematically appropriate and just in time for the anniversary! Drawn in a scary 12"x18" sketchbook (at least), but the figure itself is maybe three inches tall.

(Will post more tour drawings when I get a chance to sort through the photos.)

From the sketchbook

Color over warmup doodles. Funny how little it takes to get an illusion of complexity, even if it’s all pretty much random.

pattern one

Something from the sketchbook. Crossposted to tumblr, if you'd prefer that.

a scent of lotus

Two covers I did for the upcoming Lobster Johnson: A Scent of Lotus #1 and #2, drawn by Sebastian Fiumara, along with the original thumbnails for them. (The original art for the dark one will be for sale pretty soon too, over at Splashpageart - I'll make a new post when it's up)

Post-Stockholm

Stockholm was terrific! Thanks again to Anders and Ola for inviting us and for flawlessly organizing everything. Thanks to all of you who stopped by to get a drawing, and to everybody else we met over there-- thank you for making it such great fun.

Stockholm

Two weeks from now, April 26-28, I'll be at the Stockholm International Comics Festival-- if you're there, do come by and say hello, and I'll draw you a little something. (Emphasis on "little"-- I won't be doing commissions before or during the festival.)

abe

an Abe Sapien piece I did for "31 Days of Abe". (If you draw, you should really consider entering the competition they're running- there's still some time left) Very happy with how this one turned out.

excerpt, page 282

(Sketchbook nonsense-- but. When you're doodling, it's always a good idea to leave some room for copy. You think you're trying out a pen, but now this Bill guy exists, and the other guy, and things are happening.)

grumpy hellboy

A grumpy Hellboy from one of the previous sketchbooks; last drawing of 2012. If I remember right, it was just doodling straight in pen, trying it out, and I liked how it turned out, so I colored it -- without realizing I'd used the exact palette of the Strange Places collection (an obviously great palette by Dave Stewart). So, here's a purple one instead.

orphans

A variant cover that I did a little while ago -- for Orphans #1, out this Wednesday.
